Two different recalls are relevant to two different types of Harbor Freight manufactured jack stands. These types being the 6-ton heavy-duty jackstand which has an estimated 454,000 units produced from June 13, 2013, to November 22, 2019, and the 3-ton heavy-duty jack stand which has an estimated 1,254,000 units produced from December 1, 2012, to March 31, 2020. The jack stands numbered 61196 and 61197 (3 ton and 6 ton) can be identified by the item number located on the yellow part of the label on each jackstand. The second type of 3-ton jack stand recalled can be identified by looking for the item number 56317 on the black label on top of the jackstand. Various defects were found in the jack stands such as inconsistent indexing location indexing of the pawl armature hole and insufficient depths of the ratchet teeth of the jack stands, allowing the jack stands to slip, potentially trapping the user of the stands. These defects were also discovered in other Harbor Freight Jack Stands such as more 3-ton jack stands, numbered 56357, 61627, and 91760.
The defects in the mentioned Pittsburgh Automotive Jackstands can lead to serious accidents. Due to the failure of the ratchet teeth, the user of the heavy-duty jack stands can be pinned underneath the vehicle they are attempting to examine. The falling of the vehicle occupying the jack stand can result in serious external or internal injuries by those under or around the raised vehicle.
